Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a therapeutic health profession concerned with the assessment and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body. It is a distinct form of care which can be performed both in isolation or in combination with other types of medical care to help provide a speedy and complication-free return to normal activity/ sport.

At Escarpment Sports Medicine our physiotherapists are extensively trained and use a variety of treatment techniques including:

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy involves manual manipulation of soft body tissues (muscle, connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments) to enhance health and well-being. Massage therapy can be used to help accelerate tissue healing, relieve psychological stress, manage pain, improve circulation and relieve tissue tension. Massage therapy is an effective treatment technique for a variety of conditions including low back pain, neck and shoulder tension/ pain, sprains/ strains, sports injuries, etc. At ESMC our massage therapists are all "registered" with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and have extensive training in massage therapy techniques.

Medical Acupuncture

“Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese medicine involving the insertion of acupuncture needles into the skin at specific points on the body to achieve a therapeutic effect. No drug is injected. The needles alone create the beneficial effects of acupuncture. Acupuncture is used to encourage natural healing, improve mood and energy, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body” (Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute, 2008). Acupuncture can often be used in conjunction with other physiotherapy treatment techniques to achieve optimal improvements for a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, low back pain, sciatica, neck/ shoulder dysfunction and osteoarthritis.
