What Is Orthopaedic Surgery?
An Orthopaedic Surgeon is a surgeon specializing in the preservation and restoration of the musculoskeletal system. It includes a variety of conditions/disorders ranging from arthritis, bursitis, overuse syndromes to fractures and tears/strains of muscles, tendons, ligaments.
The treatment spectrum is broad based and individualized. It can include modalities such as physiotherapy, braces, splints, casts, injections, medications as well as surgery. Most Orthopaedic surgeons in Canada have an area of special interest, often requiring additional training.
An orthopaedic surgeon in Canada requires certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. In order to qualify, individuals must complete a Bachelor of Science Degree, a Medical Degree and successful completion of a min. 5 year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at one of Canada’s recognized University Programs. Throughout the residency program, numerous oral, written and technical tests/courses need to be completed. Entry into the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada, requires a multi-day extensive, peer-reviewed examination focusing on knowledge, skill, problem solving and readiness to become an independant orthopaedic surgeon.

In Canada, all Royal College Fellowship trained Orthopedic Surgery consultations require a referral from a primary care physician (ie. Sports Medicine Physician, Family physician, Walk-in-clinic physician or Emergency Room Physician) or other specialists. If a patient has been seen by Dr. Bischoff in the past, but it has been more than 1 year after the last visit, a new referral is necessary. New conditions/ problems also require a new referral.
